It's not often we're stuck for words, but this piece has done it - Original Production Cels over the Original Background used to make 101 Dalmatians - Simply beautiful.

The backgrounds from 101 Dalmatians have to be seen to be believed. Background artists Al Dempster, Ralph Hulett, Anthony Rizzo and Bill Layne developed a style where the background outlines are inked onto a cel overlay, which in turn is placed over an airbrushed ""base"". The result is a rich but slightly unreal environment that perfectly compliments the action on screen.
Our animation glossary says this of backgrounds:
"The backgrounds are the animated character's stage. The backgrounds are designed to allow the animated characters plenty of movement and must not distract from the main characters. Many of the backgrounds are designed to highlight the cels and must be designed with forethought and special effects to produce the desired scene. The background is usually the bottom most item in the camera set-up or it can be a three-dimensional model which is rotated behind the cels. The characters can either be photographed several times in different positions across the backgrounds or stationary while the background moves.
"
